TL;DR: A new, agentic feature within Gemini, known as Deep Research, is shifting the landscape of information gathering. Tool automates the research process by browsing hundreds of websites, analyzing findings, and generating comprehensive, multi-page reports, audio, & more

Core Functionality and Recent Enhancements

Initially launched with the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, Deep Research has been upgraded to enhances all stages of the research process, from planning and searching to the final report generation. The system is designed to break down complex queries into manageable sub-tasks, which it can then execute sequentially or simultaneously. A key feature is the "thinking panel," which allows users to track the model's learning process and its intended next steps.

A significant update in July 2025 is the ability for users to upload their own files to guide the research process. This allows for the creation of customized reports based on private data. Furthermore, the platform now supports the transformation of these reports into interactive content, quizzes, and audio overviews within Canvas.

^ This is huge BTW!

How It Works: A Look Under the Hood

Deep Research operates on a multi-step planning system. When a user enters a complex query, the system formulates a detailed research plan. The model then executes this plan, using search and web browsing tools to gather and reason over information. A novel asynchronous task manager ensures that the research process can continue without interruption, even if the user navigates away from the application.

To manage the vast amounts of information processed, Deep Research leverages Gemini's one-million-token context window in conjunction with a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) setup. This enables the system to maintain context and "remember" what it has learned throughout a research session, leading to more intelligent and relevant follow-up interactions.

Use Cases and Applications

The applications for Deep Research cater to a wide range of professional needs (prob. everyone tbh):

  • Competitive Analysis: Understanding competitor offerings, pricing, marketing strategies, and customer feedback.

  • Due Diligence: Investigating potential sales leads by analyzing a company's products, funding history, and competitive environment.

  • Topic Understanding: Gaining in-depth knowledge of subjects by comparing and contrasting key concepts and identifying underlying principles.

  • Product Comparison: Evaluating different product models based on features, performance, price, and customer reviews.

Availability and Access

Deep Research is now available to users in 150 countries and in over 45 languages. It is accessible on both desktop and mobile platforms to Google Workspace users. For those requiring more extensive use, expanded access is available through the Gemini Advanced and qualifying enterprise plans. Notably, students in several countries are being offered a free upgrade to the Google AI Pro plan, which includes access to Deep Research.
